What are 4k Ultra-HD discs?

A 4k Ultra-HD Blu-ray disc has a much higher capacity than a standard Blu-ray disc, which allows it to store a movie with Ultra-HD resolution. Normal blu-ray discs look great, but the maximum resolution is 1920 x 1080. A 4K Ultra-Hd Blu-ray disc has a resolution of 3840 x 2160. That's 4 times the amount of pixels.

Many discs also have high dynamic range (HDR) and wide color gamut (WCG) content, which can provide a much more noticeable improvement than 4K resolution. Sound can also be noticeably more dynamic and theatrical on a 4k Ultra-HD disc.

Who can watch this new format?

You need a blu-ray player that can play 4k discs. New gaming systems such as Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X can also play these discs.

How big is the collection?

It's small. We'd built a collection as part of our theater renovation in 2020 and now we're adding those discs (and others) to the circulating collection, totaling around 100 as a starting point. We'll re-assess the collection after its circulated for a while and we have an idea of library user interest.
