A tale of female friendship and family secrets on a small Korean island where women make their living diving for sea creatures in the dangerous ocean.

Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls living on the island of Jeju, are best friends from very different backgrounds. Young-sook is the eldest daughter of the chief of the diving collective. Mi-ja is the daughter of Japanese collaborators. As the girls take up their positions as baby divers, they know they are beginning a life of excitement and responsibility, but also danger in the unforgiving sea. Despite their love for each other, Mi-ja and Young-sook are sent down different paths that will push their friendship to the breaking point.

Lisa See writes an epoch of family and friendship set over many decades, beginning during the period of Japanese colonialism in the 1930s and 1940s, World War II, the Korean War, and even the modern era of cell phones and wet suits. This beautiful, thoughtful novel illuminates a unique and unforgettable culture, and unique and unforgettable women.
